Blanket Guidelines

Make a Blanket for a Child in Need:

We accept knitted, crocheted, quilted, sewn or hand tied fleece blankets size 36” x 36” up to twin size. All blankets need to be new, smoke free, clean, washable and free of pet hair.

Your attention to the blanket guidelines below ensures that our volunteers don’t have to spend time repairing blankets before they can be given to a child.

Suggested Sizes:

We accept blankets of all sizes. Measurements do not need to be exact.

  • Baby - no smaller than 36” square

  • Child – approximately 45 x 60

  • Teen – approximately 50 x 72

  • Twin size - 60” - 66” x 86” - 90”

Knitted and Crocheted Afghans:

  • 100% acrylic yarn – no wool, due to allergies

  • We do not accept baby blankets with Eyelash yarn, Fun Fur yarn, or any kind of fringe or tassels.

  • Use small needles or hooks and soft baby yarn when making a blanket for a baby.
Little fingers, toes and medical equipment can get caught into large, loose, loopy holes

  • If you prefer using larger hooks, consider making an afghan for a child or teen.

  • Leave a long tail and weave in ends. Please do not cut off yarn at knot.

Fleece:

Unfortunately, we cannot accept blankets made with the "Make it Give it" fleece, it is not as durable and we want our blankets to last through years of snuggling and hugging. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Fleece cut by the yard - 48” for child and 72” for teen.

  • We prefer skip stitch fleece blankets with crochet or strippy edge.

  • Please remove/cut off selvages before starting. Fleece has selvedge on two sides. One will most likely have writing on it and the opposite side will have small holes.

  • Make sure fleece is right side out

  • Width of ties must be consistent in size

  • Finished blankets should lie flat and not make a bowl.

  • Minky/Fuzzy fleece should be bound so it doesn’t shed. It can NOT be used for tied blankets.

  • When crocheting around fleece the foundation row needs to be tight and consistent

  • If you would like to purchase fleece to make blankets for our group we would be happy to prepare it for you. Please contact us for more information.

Quilts:

  • 100% cotton or flannel, kid friendly fabric

  • Please use age appropriate fabric for size of blanket, e.g. don’t use baby fabric on a quilt that is teen size

  • Binding should have no raw edges

  • We accept finished quilts or quilt tops

  • We always have a need for self binding baby blankets. You can find the tutorial on how to make them here.

Completed blankets may be dropped off at one of our drop off locations or you can bring them to one of our meetings. We would love to meet you!
